HOW DO I GET MY MUSIC FEATURED ON BLOGS?

Getting your single, EP or album in music blogs is a proven method to increase sales and online streams. But how do you get blogged about?

The optics surrounding music bloggers is that they are highly unapproachable, but that’s not true. Most bloggers are hobbyists and do it for personal enjoyment rather than financial gain. Blogs are about personal opinions (remember this!), their likes and dislikes, basically an online diary of their thoughts. So how do you get them to write about your music?

Target the blogs you want to be on. Start off by identifying 30 - 40 blogs relevant to your genre. Pick some big blogs, but target more based on what they are already writing about as these are more likely to cover you. If you’re just starting out it’s best to focus on the blogs that are located near you, in the same country at least.

Start reading them and post comments. Don’t promote yourself in these comments, make it all about the blog and the blogger. Give genuine feedback, engage. From the blogger’s perspective, it’s all about comments and engagement so they’ll appreciate it and it will start to develop that personal link to you, so when you send music they will be curious to hear it.

Search for old blog posts about your music or another artist in your circle or community.

If you have previous releases, there’s a chance your music may have been covered before. If it has, then reach-out and thank the blogger. If not then find blogs about artists you know, comment and let them know your link to them, eg: “Great post, we supported this band last year and they were amazing”. Always use a signature with a link to your website/FB/Insta/etc so they can look you up if they want! Again, don’t ask for a review on your 1st contact. Just connect with them on a human level, you’ll have plenty of time to make yourself known. As with almost everything else in music promotion, play the long game.

Search for Blogs about bands that you are compared to or sound like-.

Note: This applies to niche artists rather than huge international artists.

Read these blogs about similar artists/bands and try to evaluate if this is a blog that would write about your music? If so then follow this blog and start posting comments. When you feel that you’ve made yourself known try sending a simple hello, and mention that you have music and that you’d love if they could check it out. Introduce yourself and have a clear grasp on your story. Make sure that story is an interesting one and if you’re on a mission let them know what that mission is about. Include a line in your mail that says something like “If you choose to post, send back a link so we can promote it”. This will ensure that the blogger knows you’ll share their blog everywhere. After you’ve got your review, make sure you link back to the blogger and thank them. If you have your own blog then be sure to link to them in your blogroll. If not then add a links page to your website or FB page and link back to the blog. These link backs are crucial for the blogger.

That’s it! If you’d like me to send you some blog contacts that I’ve built up then just pop me a private message via Instagram (@daveskelton_producer) or Facebook (Dave Skelton - Producer). If you’d like the contacts tailored to you genre just send me a link to your track and let me know your genre and I’ll do my best to sort you out!
